Jaume Santonja was recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO). Previously, Jaume had been combining his position of principal percussionist from the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra with his orchestra conducting activity.

Jaume has lead concerts with the Orquesta de Extremadura (OEX), The World Orchestra, Orquesta de Córdoba, ADDA·Simfònica from Alicante, Spanish National Youth Orchestra (JONDE), Antwerp Symphony Youth Orchestra, Orchestra of Utrecht's Conservatory and Antwerp's Conservatory Orchestra. Jaume is founder of the AbbatiaViva music collective.

Next engagements will bring him in front of the Orquesta de Extremadura (OEX) appearing at the subscription concerts 18/19, The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and Orquesta de Radio Televisión Española (RTVE, Madrid).

Jaume has obtained remarkable results at different international contests for conducting. He was awarded second prize at 'V Concurso de Dirección Orquestal' in Córdoba (Spain), reached semifinals at 'I Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition' and third round at the last 'XII Cadaqués Orquestra International Conducting Competition' with the last seven candidates. Jaume was one of the selected candidates for the final phases of the last 'Donatella Flick Conducting Competition' in London.

Jaume holds a Master of Music - conducting from the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium) and a Master of Music - percussion from the Amsterdam Conservatorium (Holland). Studied his Bachelor at ESMuC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain).

As a player Jaume had the pleasure to collaborate with World-Class orchestras such us Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra or the Spanish National Orchestra among others. There he could play under conductors like Mariss Jansons, Daniele Gatti, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Valery Gergiev, Pierre Boulez, Andris Nelsons, Zubin Mehta, James Levine, Charles Dutoit, Essa-Pekka Salonen etc. As student was member of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the Verbier Festival Orchestra.

Jaume has also activity as music arranger and orchestrator, even a small number of compositions, mainly for chamber music (other of his passions).
